Currency War Risk Threatens Investment Recovery: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The growing danger of a currency war is threatening the recovery in global investment, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said on Thursday.

Disputes between different countries about their exchange rates were adding to uncertainty which was deterring businesses from investing abroad, said James Zhan, director of UNCTAD's investment and enterprise division.

The international community has endorsed the Millenium Development Goal of reducing the poverty rate in the developing world by 50% over the 25 years, 1990-2015.  While the target is arbitrary, it is nonetheless important to have a stretch goal like this to challenge us

Renewable energy topped fossil fuels and nuclear for the second year in a row in the USA and Europe in 2009, according to the Global Wind Energy Association (GWEC).Renewable energy accounted for 60% of new capacity installed in Europe and over 50% of new capacity in the USA in 2009. Action to curb greenhouse gases is going in the "wrong direction," said the energy advisor to 28 industrialized nations, adding that under current trends carbon emissions would instead double by mid-century. UN Says Poor Nations On Track To Cut Poverty

LEDERER (AP) – Jun 23, 2010 UNITED NATIONS — The global economic crisis has slowed the fight against poverty but the developing world is still on track to meet a key U.N. goal of halving the number of people living on less than $1 a day by 2015, according to a report released Wednesday. The U.N. report cited new World Bank estimates suggesting that the crisis left an additional 50 million people in extreme poverty in 2009 and will leave some 64 million impoverished by the end of 2010, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and eastern and southeastern Asia.

Global Arms Spending Tops $1.6T

(Associated Press)Despite the global financial crisis, world military spending almost doubled in the past decade to reach $1.6 trillion Cdn in 2009, a Swedish think-tank said Wednesday. In its 2010 yearbook, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, or SIPRI, said that spending between 2008 and 2009 grew 5.9 per cent. The United States remains the biggest spender, accounting for some 54 per cent of the increase, the report said.
