There are several different directions that our planet can take to address the ever growing need for water and energy. This will involve integrating technologies of a large and small scale into our grid and into our homes as well. There are two main technologies in which to address large scale water sustainability: desalination and ‘pure water’ recycling. As the California dries out, it is increasingly important to adopt proven strategies to maintain the current standard of living.

Flooding in Chad. Use of technology to warn of disasters is increasing
Show

DAKAR, 16 August 2013 (IRIN) - Mobile phone, geographic information systems (GIS), Twitter and other technologies are increasingly being used to warn communities of potential crises and inform them how to prepare, and to help governments and aid agencies predict how emergencies may unfold.

IRIN looks at some of the ways these innovations are transforming early warning and preparedness.

Percent of the Population that Has Hi-Speed Internet Access at Home by Race/Ethnicity

Access to high-speed connections such as DSL and cable modems, represent a new dimension of digital divide. With the rapidity of technological change, very many people who thought yesterday have sufficient technological skills and now find themselves sidelined and  destabilized.

About a quarter of whites and a third of Asians have of broadband access at home, unlike the Mexicans who have the lowest rate.

Only one of out ten Mexican-Americans has a hi-speed connection at home.

Five thousand metres above the most biodiverse corner of the Amazon, tropical ecologist Greg Asner and his team see a kaleidoscope of colours among a mass of green.

Huddled in a twin-engine Dornier 228 aeroplane called the Carnegie Airborne Observatory, the scientists are capturing multicoloured images of the Peruvian rainforest canopy that verge on the psychedelic.

Regenerative Design Trajectory

LEED changed our awareness of the unwanted side-effects of building design, construction and operations.  Reduction of harm was the standard. That approach has, in many ways, transformed the marketplace, but is it still enough?  What is an appropriate goal for the future?

Under the guidance of regenerative design principles, it is possible to design projects in harmony with their ecosystem. Projects that improve their environment, are impact-free, and anticipate future needs.

What is the Geospatial Community Doing to Put Clean Water in More Places Around the World?

Show

Written by Jeff Thurston

Water is valuable, but clean water that people can drink has greater value. Some regions have an abundance of clean water, and others have do not – a geographic factor. In other places pressure on natural ecosystems that generate water are placing great stress on ecosystems, often overwhelming them. The production of clean water is a result of the protection and stewardship of natural ecosystems, but also the result of efficient and effective management.  And, on that basis geospatial technologies have a large role to play.
